That intermittent squeak when you brake is often a built-in wear indicator telling you the pads are getting thin. It's the cheapest possible time to act.
A metallic grinding sound means the pads are gone and metal is now cutting into the rotor. This is the "you waited too long" sound, it turns a pad replacement into pads and rotors. Get it in right away.
